A Japanese album swathed in gauze and secured with string or an Israeli
album wrapped in coarse sandpaper; A CD fastened to a wooden plank
with a wing nut or placed in a paper envelope sealed in wax: in a time
when playing music hardly involves opening jewelboxes, artists have
claimed back the CD package as a means to assert the individuality of
their music.
At the height of the vinyl age, album sleeves were an intricate affair –
artists used the 12 inch cardboard square as a canvas for their vision,
gatefolds were opened to reveal elaborate diptychs (or even triptychs, in
double albums) and the pockets were loaded with lyric sheets, stickers and
any flat gimmick you could think of, all to make the listening experience
more whole.
The introduction of Compact Discs made album designers scramble for a
new way to make their art noticeable in the diminished format. They
couldn’t replicate the detailed artwork, but they could make the CD fancy –
cushion it and wrap it in blue velveteen for Madonna or place AC/DC in a
fancy tin box and charge accordingly.
Nowadays, most of our music comes in shapeless form – to wit, designers
have yet to invent the standard icon to represent an mp3 file. Uploading
and downloading and clicking and amplifying are all done flatly and have
no tactile quality.
The underground artists whose works are exhibited here create truly
limited editions. The fact they are not mass-distributed enables them to
give every unit the treatment it deserves. The result is a package that
slightly differs every time and creates a work you can see and feel while
listening to the music. Some acts even go so far as to include locks of hair.
Intimidating? Maybe, but you can’t get much closer to the artist than this.

Dick Hebdige, in his seminal book Subculture, starts his account of style
with a description from a Jean Genet novel of how a confiscated tube of
vaseline can represent subversion and revolt. He suggests that “the most
mundane objects – a safety pin, a pointed shoe, a motor cycle – […] like
the tube of vaseline, take on a symbolic dimension, becoming a form of
stigmata, tokens of a self-imposed exile”. The virtualisation of cultural
products makes it more difficult for objects to stand for ideas like these.
Durutti Column could design a record with a sandpaper cover to destroy all
the others in your collection, in homage to Guy Debord’s Mémoires. What
would you have to do today to have the same effect – Infect your mp3s with
a virus? The DiY designs in this exhibition are tokens of a self-imposed
exile from an industry that is itself in decline. And yet they stand for the
perverse aspiration of DiY music to both belong to a medium that is
reproducible and mass-marketed and at the same time to reject the market
rules by which it plays. Hand-made packaging represents a democratic
demand to appropriate the means of production, to make your own damn
music rather than be a passive consumer, and yet at the same time, by
virtue of its singularity, it limits access to those few fans who end up with
the goods, making it actually quite exclusive.
In this context, something interesting happens to the cardboard packaging.
It was meant to be nothing but a cheap, light yet surprisingly strong
material to shelter an object from a sharp, abrasive, damp world. But then
cardboard became a design material in its own right, covering books with
post-industrial skins, turning the simplest everyday objects into branded
commodities in ‘no-brand’ chains like Muji, decorating art installations with
readymade architecture and protecting fancy retro Christmas toys from
eager shoppers. The CDs (but strangely not the vinyl records) that came
inside the cardboard, made of a material that looked like a shiny gift from
the future only 25 years ago, are all but obsolete. Their guts spilled all over
the internet as mp3 downloads or compressed inside tiny nano players,
they seem as heavy and ancient as a typewriter. It looks now like some
kind of weird and singular cardboard packaging around the CDs senses
that the future they promised will soon be replaced by leaner, more
efficient futures. When a new social order finally arrives, it is possible that
we will be better off with cardboard that could shelter us from the rain and,
stuffed into our shoes, could keep our feet warm. We remain hopeful that
there will also be a place, though, for these relics of a different age, with its
paradoxical faith in the liberatory value of DiY culture.

בגיל 15 , אחרי אחת מהגיחות המפחידות לתל אביב הרחוקה, חזרתי לכרמל המשמים
והאפרורי- חוף המבטחים שלי, צלצלתי לחבריי הקרובים והזעקתי אותם לביתי בדחיפות.
יריב ) DXM על הפרק: שתי קסטות (קסטות קראו לזה, אז בתחילת שנות השמונים) של
אלטר, רונן הופמן, אייל דורון וקרני פוסטל). המוזיקה, כמו כל דבר בגיל הזה, הייתה חזקה
ומשמעותית, מדהימה ומרגשת. ועטיפות התקליטים והקסטות היו עבורנו בני העשרה
הנרגשים, מרכיב חשוב בהתכנסות המשותפת על השטיח בחדר- מדורת השבט ההורמונלית
, (מאוחר יותר הרסו הבנות את הכול). אבל אם נחזור לאותו אחה”צ סגרירי של ינואר 83
הייתה דממה ובאוויר הורגש בלא כל צל של ספק משהו שונה, אחר: זו היתה לנו הפעם
הראשונה להחשף לעבודת עיצוב של עטיפת אלבום שנעשתה בידיים של האמן עצמו.
ההרגשה הייתה שממש נגענו ביוצר, ובדימיונינו צפנו רואים ואינם נראים בחדרו המעופש,
עמוס בתקליטים גיטרות ומגברים זולים, והתבוננו בו ובחבריו ישובים על שטיח מדובלל בין
ערימות של מגזרות זירוקס, גוחנים בעמלנות, מדביקים, חותכים ומקפלים.. והכל מסתחרר
ומתחבר – תרבות, חד פעמיות, מוזיקה ועיצוב, רוח ואמת טהורה, אמונה ומימוש, אנרכיה
וסדר.
המשמעת חוברת לאובססיה, היכולת והכישרון ליד המקרה, האסתטיקה לטינופת.
מרנדר, קשה להבין את המשמעות של After Effects- בבית קפה ו Macbook pro היום, עם
כל זה. היום-יום שלנו מורכב מהורדות סדרתיות של אמ-פי-שלושים מאתרי שיתוף, בקצב
שעולה על קצב הייצור.
כמעצב, בא לי להכריז שמי שלא הדביק (נדבק), חתך (נחתך) תכנן (נכשל), לא יבין לעולם מה
כזה שיושב בתוך הראש והנשמה. מעצב undo . בחיינו המקצועיים undo- באמת מקומו של ה
אמיתי וטהור ישאף גם לשמוח וגם להתייסר על הטעות שאין חזור ממנה, שתתגלגל דרך
החנויות ותגיע לידיו של מאזין בן עשרה. הרי הטעות והפספוס, הקימוט והלכלוך, הם הם
מקורה של האבולוציה בעיצוב.
מי הם אלה שיקבלו את רצף השגיאות הנפלא הזה ויאמצו אותו לחיקם אם לא המעצבים,
שהבינו, שכמו בוואבי-סאבי היפני – העיוות, חוסר הדיוק, תהליך ההתבלות והשחיקה, הם
מצב בפני עצמו. מצב מושלם בחוסר שלמותו.
עשה זאת בעצמך נולד במכוון כנגד הממסד, המערכת, המכונה, הריבוי, אך היום הוא כבר לא
בהכרח נובע ממחסור בתקציב. תהליכי הייצור הפכו ב 30- שנה האחרונות לזולים, ואין ספק
שהיום זול יותר ופשוט הרבה יותר להדפיס עטיפה לדיסק מאשר להכין אותה ידנית, אפילו
בכמויות קטנות. אפשר להוסיף שאפילו האג’נדה האנטי ממסדית, שליוותה את היוצרים
שבחרו בדרך זו אי אז בשנות השמונים, מרגישה ארכאית ומיותרת, בכל מה שקשור ב”יצירה
עצמית” היום. לנפנף בדגלי מחאה תוך כדי יצירת אלבום זה כל כך.. איך לומר..
הרעיון של להכין עבודה בידיים נובע מצורך בייחודיות ובטביעת אצבע אינדיווידואלית, ולא
ממניעים פוליטיים-חברתיים. במשך העשור האחרון הלייבל המוזיקלי האקספרימנטלי ‘תדר’
(גל תושיה, דוד עובדיה ואני כמעצב) ייצר אלבומים שנעשו בצבע דפוס אחד, ושלוש חותמות
גומי (גדולות!) בכל הוצאה והוצאה. (טירחה רבה, מעט מכירות, הוצאות כבדות…) הסיבה
הייתה אידיאולוגית-יצירתית ולא אידיאולוגית-פוליטית/חברתית. לייבלים אירופאים
ואמריקאים אחרים, אף הם מחפשים את הכמויות הקטנות והמוצר הייחודי גם כשהם
מארחים באמנים גדולים בתחומם (קולין עבור מורט-לאבאש וכיו”ב).
אין ספק שבשנים האחרונות יש עלייה ניכרת בביקוש ל”ייחודי” הזה. בתחומי האפנה למשל,
מעמד הביניים מגיב ברכישה מאסיבית של “קאסטום מייד” לאי יכולתו לרכוש מוצרי יוקרה
ולסלידה מהמוצרים הזולים של היצרנים המאסיביים כגון פוקס, קאסטרו, זארה ואייצ’ אנד
אם. והתגובה החברתית הזו באה לידי ביטוי בכל תחום צריכה ותרבות אחר. בשקט, ללא
צורך במנשרים ובהפגנות (אוהלים).
אי אפשר יקר מדי! אי אפשר זול מדי! רוצים נגיש, סביר, ישיר ובעיקר ייחודי. רוצים בידול
חברתי, יצירות ליודעי ח”ן, התכרבלות בתוככי השבט התרבותי. “עשה זאת בעצמך” או אולי
“לעצמך” ולחברים ‘מביני העניין’ שלך.
אבל אני חוזר אחורה בזמן כי אני מתערסל במקורות התרבותיים שלנו, ש”עשו בעצמם” מתוך
אמונה יוקדת (ומחסור במזומנים).
תקופות נאיביות ונהדרות שבהן מוריסיי שר שצריך לתלות את השדרן, כי המוזיקה שהוא
אינו מפסיק לנגן, אינה אומרת לו, למורסיי ובני תרבותו, כלום, על החיים שלהם.

Another World is Possible

עולם אחר אפשרי

פתיחה: ה-27 לספטמבר

התערוכה עולם אחר אפשרי מציגה עשר עבודות וידאו חדשות שצולמו בישראל בשנה האחרונה. העבודות הופקו במהלך 2011 בתמיכת הקרן החדשה לקולנוע ולטלוויזיה, במסגרת תחום הקולנוע הניסיוני. האמנים המשתתפים בתערוכה התבקשו על ידי הקרן, לעסוק ביחסים שבין קולנוע ניסיוני ובין אומנויות אחרות ובהן קולנוע, מוסיקה ותיאטרון. עשר העבודות שמוצגות בתערוכה שונות זו מזו בהצגתן ובאופי עשייתן והבחירה בהן נעשתה מתוך עניין במימוש ההצעות הראשוניות שהגישו האמנים המשתתפים בתערוכה.

הצפייה בעבודות המוצגות מזמינה את הצופה אל בסיס המתח שכרוך במחשבה על צילום וקולנוע ניסיוני בתוך העשייה המקומית. מהעבודות עולה תחושה חריפה של ניתוק, הן מנכיחות רגעים בהם הסובייקט הופך למנותק מהמחוות שלו, ממילותיו, מקולו שלו. מתוך מרחב של ייצוג מפוצל, שכמו קורם עור וגידים לנגד עינינו, מגיחות העבודות ומתקבלת תמונת עולם של חברה שאיבדה את היכולת לשלוט על הדימויים שהיא מייצרת לעצמה.

תחושת הניכור וההתקה אינן מתגלמות רק על ידי יצירת הזרוֹת (דה-אוטומטיזציה), לופים רפלקסיביים או פעולות פירוק ויזואליות.  למעשה, העבודות מדמיינות סיטואציות מוכרות מחדש ולכן הן ממשיכות להדהד את מופען הקודם. דומה כי הן  שואפות להצביע על חפיפה מתמדת בין כמה עולמות, תוך סירוב לייצוג חד מימדי ואי הישמעות לגבולות מומצאים. הן מדגישות את המימד הקונקרטי של המחשבה הניסיונית.

The exhibition ‘Another World is Possible’ presents ten new video works filmed in Israel over the past year. The works were produced throughout 2011 with the sponsorship of the New Israeli Fund for Cinema and Television, within the framework of experimental film. The Fund asked the artists to examine the relations between experimental film and other forms of art, including film, music, and theater. The ten works displayed in this exhibit differ from each other in their presentation and their form, and they were chosen out of interest in the initial proposals submitted by the artists participating in the exhibit.

Observing the works, viewers are invited into the core of tension underlying the thought about experimental film and photography in the local arena. A sharp feeling of detachment arises from these works, as they present moments in which the subject becomes disassociated from his gestures, his words, his own voice. Within a space of divided representation that seems to take form in front of our eyes, the works surface and there appears the image of a society that has lost its ability to control the images it creates for itself.

Claire Waffel was selected as “artist in residence” in Bezalel, Yaffo 23/ Jerusalem. She spent 4 months living and working in the city and the results of her research and work will be displayed from June 9^th as part of the exhibition Life/Art at Bezalel, Yaffo 23.

Waffel uses a variety of media such as film, photography, drawing and installation to create an interaction between disparate time periods and structures. Her works often depict the collision of parallel but inconsistent time periods, revealing unusual aspects of history and memory, while also examining the medium according to its relationship with time. Waffel’s work ranges from personal narrative to analytical abstract installations.

The first component of the exhibition is a short video entitled “Still,” created in 2010. The film, set in Berlin, is pieced together by a series of images of the artist lying down rigidly in various spaces throughout the city. The clips present a multi-faceted resistance against both the fast-paced movement and the verticality of the city. Her tense position is not reminiscent of death or falling, but rather aims to underscore her active decision to resist, and encourages a sense of irritation and discomfort. The video also serves to test the audience’s reaction and invite the viewer to become involved in the installation.

The other two pieces are variations on photography, created by Waffel during her residency at Yaffo 23. While the video explores especially the relationship between landscape and cityscape, these installations examine the interplay between landscape and ideology. With the assumption that the presentation of a landscape is shaped by ideology, the artist approaches landscape as a conversation between geography and history, and examines what is projected onto a landscape.

The first of these two pieces is a large black and white photograph of a manmade hill near the Dead Sea. The photograph is cut into strips, which hang, together but separate, from the ceiling. The second is a series of aluminum triangles on which are transferred various blurred and abstracted photographic images of the Dead Sea, Masada, and the Negev desert. The aluminum gives texture and dimensionality to the images, and the layout engages the exhibition space in a multi-dimensional manner.

Claire Waffel studied for her BA in Media Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, and received an MA in Photography at the London College of Communication, University of Arts, London. Her work has been exhibited at the Kunsthaus Dresden, and the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien in Berlin, and numerous group shows. Her residency in Bezalel, Yaffo 23 was supported by Schir-Art Concepts, The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and the Goethe Institue, Jerusalem.
